OOW16 Rejection!

In past years I have been rejected by the Oracle OpenWorld, and last year I was positive I would get selected, but this year I was even MORE positive I would get selected yet it was not to be!  Maybe next year, since I just gave my AppsTech presentation, which was really well received and pushed me a bit so if I add some more polish it I could get accepted for OOW17!!

Oracle OpenWorld 15: Rejected!

While I may have been rejected for OOW last year, this year I thought for SURE I would get in this year!  Well, it was not to be!  What seems to be different this year is how many other people have been rejected as well, which from what the grapevine says is, because the Moscone Center is being renovated and not 100% completed yet so the conference is going to be smaller than it has in years!  Wondering who else got rejected?  Click on #TeamRejectedByOracleOpenWorld on Twitter and then follow some of these people, because there are a lot of Oracle ACE Directors, Presidents of companies or Oracle User groups which have been rejected and maybe you can get something positive out of this!

Oracle Open World: Blogger Meetup

Are you heading to Oracle Open World?  Do you blog about Oracle technology?  If you answered yes to both of these, then you should sign up for Pythian's blogger meetup!  Just take a look at the line up with everybody that is signing up, and it is a veritable who's who of Oracle bloggers so do not miss this great opportunity to do some networking.  Between this and OakTable World going on during Oracle Open World, I am really sad that I am not going to be there again this year but there is always next year!  Maybe I will snag a Discover Pass and then just spend a few days at the off conference events during the week.  I mean, it is a plan right?  :}

OOW14: Rejected!

I already shared something from Twitter this week, so what has hit me today and is on my mind a bit was the rejection for Oracle OpenWorld 2014 of all three of my proposals.  This is not a new feeling, as I was rejected last year too, but I think with the past year behind me I felt like I was ready to make another big jump like I have this year going from my first conference presentation for OAUG to my second presentation at the Hotsos Symposium.  Sure this means that I can focus on my next big project at work that I want to use for more material eventually, and that I don't have to rush any of my material together for the new proposals that are almost from scratch, yet I feel like I am going to miss such a great opportunity to learn and meet more people that have the same interests I do.  I am not giving up, next year I will be submitting again and between then and now are more conference opportunities like Hotsos and Collaborate where I might find the right stage again!

If you have had your proposal accepted for OpenWorld, this year or any other, what are some tips that you can give the rest of us that are trying to get our material chosen?

If you have had your proposal declined for OpenWorld, this year or another, what do you think are some reasons that you might not have been picked?

Oracle OpenWorld 2014 Call for Proposals!

The floodgates have opened for submitting abstracts to this year's Oracle OpenWorld!  I've been able to present for OAUG and Hotsos, but I'm looking to join others at OpenWorld as a presenter this year to continue the journey I've started.  Time to brush up on abstracts that might have been rejected previously, those selected for other conferences, and brand new abstracts that are percolating in my brain for OOW this year!

Oracle in the Apps Store!

I was looking in Apple's Apps Store for something else this weekend, when I decided to do a search for Oracle and I was amazed to find several apps which I thought were worth the download!

Oracle - This is the one stop shop for everything Oracle from news, support, events and even blogs!

Oracle Open World - This is an app I'm looking forward to using next year.  :}

Oracle Events - Even though the other app has events in it, I've loaded this on my phone just in case this gets me more updated information.

Sun ZFS Appliance Monitor - This one blows my mind away that I can monitor our ZFS online through our phones anytime we want.  I'm dying to turn this on!

Want to find more apps?  Visit the page for Oracle apps in the Apps Store!

BREAKING NEWS: OOW13 News

We interrupt your regularly scheduled blog --

Larry Ellison has just announced a new Database In-Memory Option which can make queries 100 times faster, but better than that is the faster transaction rates such as 3 to 4 times faster row insertion.  How is this being done?  Oracle 12c stores data in rows and columns simultaneously with this new option so the columns (introduction of "Columnar technology") are being kept "in-memory" and transactional integrity is kept due to the fact that there are no transactions being saved back on the columns, just the rows.  Cores will be able to scan billions of rows a second per vector instruction, and report results will be returned sub-second because the current OLTP architecture is being slowed down by analytic indexes which the column views will actually take advantage of.

This option makes the database easier to tune, run faster, just as secure as today but once the switch is flipped you get better performance even though nothing structurally changes when you flip the switch.  A live demo of a 3 billion row table (courtesy of Wikipedia data) showed how it was more than 1000 times faster when the In-Memory Option is turned on!  This allows companies to Scale-Out and Scale-Up with different types of hardware.  Speaking of hardware, Larry introduced several new components:

M6-32 Big Memory Machine - This has 32 Terabytes of DRAM memory, 32 SPARC M6 chips (twice as many cores as the M5), and as he casually mentioned is available right now.  Today.  Go buy one!  Then he elaborated on the Interconnect it uses to process 3 TeraBYTES, not TeraBITS, per second and on top of everything else the machine costs $3M which is less than a third of the cost of IBMs biggest machine.  He noted that their IBM partners in the room weren't clapping.  Awesome.

M6-32 SuperCluster - Just like it's brother the Big Memory Machine, it is the fastest database machine out there but the plus for this is that it connects to Exadata as integrated storage to speed things up by a factor of 10 via the Infiniband I/O Interconnect.

Oracle Database Backup, Logging, Recovery Appliance - Quite a mouthful, but Larry says he named it so I guess that's that.  This doesn't act like a file backup utility that loses data, slows down the business, and isn't scalable; instead this platform which is "like a Exadata machine" ships all of the logs so it results in the ability to restore as of any point in time.  Going a step further, this can all be delivered as a Cloud Service!
He closed with a snippet of what is the "Datacenter of the Future", which I think is a sneak-peak of things to come, where he details out a data center that has specialized servers for the core, backup, analytic and database functions to increase what customers can get out of their data centers.

OOW13 Rejection!

While I've been selected to speak at OAUG's Connection Point - AppsTech conference in July, I won't get the chance to speak at Oracle Open World this year.  With thousands of submissions, I'm not horribly surprised about the rejection but it's also some motivation to either get better material or work on presenting it better in an abstract form for next year's submission.  Honestly, if they selected the other presentation that I'm not currently spending time working on for OAUG I think I would've started pulling my hair out!  Anyways, if you were rejected (or just want to plan for next year) you can be notified when registration opens for OOW14.

Oracle OpenWorld 13 call for papers

It's that time of year again for Oracle OpenWorld to roll around, and the call for papers has just opened up!  I've submitted a few proposals to OAUG and Hotsos over the past few months, and not only am I going to submit that again for OOW, but I'm going to be working on a completely new proposal from a lot of things I've started blogging about recently.  Have you been looking forward to this event as well?
