Weekend Learning: Collecting information to troubleshoot SQL performance problems

Have you ever run into a situation where SQL is not performing like it should?  We have a lot of tools now compared to "back in the day" (before Oracle Enterprise Manager) but some of the classics can be found in MOS article "SRDC - How to Collect Standard Information for a SQL Performance Problem" from note ID 1594386.1 and even if you do not need to work with Oracle to help solve the problem you can utilize these tools to diagnose and possibly resolve it!

Weekend Learning: JDBC driver cursor leak on 11.2.0.4

Do you know how sometimes you can stumble across a solution for a problem, when you are not even looking for it?  Well let me introduce you to My Oracle Support document "Cursor Leak After Upgrading to JDBC Driver 11.2.0.4" via note ID 1939530.1 and ask if you have been having problem with "middleware" or "web services" after upgrading to 11.2.0.4?  We are not on 11.2.0.4 YET, but on 11.2.0.3 we have had some issues with memory leaks so this type of issue could be the next condition we encounter so now I am aware of it and can potentially start looking for it when we start upgrading (and testing).  Luckily we have not had the ORA-01000 errors indicated in this article, but forewarned is forearmed.

Weekend Learning: Troubleshooting memory leaks for UNIX (Siebel)

Recently I ran across the My Oracle Support article "How To Troubleshoot Memory Leaks on UNIX" in note ID 477522.1 but I was a bit disappointed to find it relating to Siebel application/architecture because I do not know anything about this nor am I aware of us running this software at work.  Why did I still post it then?  Well, this might not be specifically apples to apples for everybody (and if you support Siebel, bonus!) yet I think there are a few general ideas that can be extended for other applications so it is certainly worth a quick review.

When a bug really is not a bug

Since I do not get to develop or QA in my regular job duties, articles like this one from Maris Elsins are perfect eye-openers as they expand my horizons a bit so when I get into unusual situations I have more tools in my mental toolbox.  Go read Maris' article about what he found when he encountered an issue where it really looked like it was a bug on his version of the Oracle DB, but after troubleshooting and analysis it really was not a bug at all.

This situation reminded me a lot of my recent posting about how XLA data builds up and affects the A/P module in ways that were totally not expected or encountered when we were testing R12!

Troubleshooting PO Output

After doing my first blog spotlight last month, I'm convinced that it is a good idea so this week I'm going to spotlight the Oracle EBS Support blog.  You may be asking yourself how this blog is different from Steven Chan's blog?  Well, Steven is in charge of the Applications Technology Group at Oracle and as a result his blog is focused on the EBS from the ATG perspective where this blog is specifically aimed at the EBS and the modules that comprise it.

A few months ago, the Master Troubleshooting Guide for POXPOPDF (PO Output for Communication) was released on My Oracle Support.  This guide includes setup checks, targeted patching, common issues, and additional troubleshooting help so it is well worth putting into your toolbox and procedures in order to avoid issues!
